Driver Safety System
I liked the advert I saw in toady's Times for the Cyclops GPS safety system. It's not a speed camera detector to enable you to break the speed limits with minimal danger of being caught. Rather it's a "driver safety system" that "gives you advance warning of all fixed & mobile speed cameras at accident blackspots".
I suppose it's a clever rejoinder to the government's claim that these cameras are not revenue generators, but are safety measures placed at accident blackspots (which I think we all agree is not strictly true).
So does that mean it doesn't give warnings unless the camera is really at an accident blackspot? No, didn't think so. And does it give warnings where there is a real accident blackspot with no camera? No, didn't think that either.
The A66 and A68 in Durham are two roads with a terrible accident history - does it warn you to go slow when you're on these roads? Even though there's signs saying "Accident blackspot 144 causalties in last 5 years"? Of course not. If there was a camera there would it tell you? Yes, of course.
They can dress it up however they want to, but it's still really just a clever device to avoid speeding fines.
I guess the day that SPECS cameras are in place everywhere will make all of these devices useless. I suppose by then though there'll be some sort of device to somehow blackout or fool the SPECS cameras... (all in the interest of "driver safety" of course).

Hello,
I was wondering if you could do a story on our new DriveTronic GPS driver safety product.
DriveTronics is installed in a vehicle, and uses a digital voice to automatically warn the driver when they make common driving mistakes that causes a lot of accidents. The instant digital voice helps prevent accidents, for example it warns the driver for...
. Driving over a certain speed
. Not wearing seat belts
. Hard cornering
. Hard acceleration
. Hard breaking
. Aggressive driving
. Turning without signaling
. Leaving turn signal on without turning
. Driving too many hours in one day (truck drivers can only drive 8 or 9 hours per day)
. Driving during curfew
. Reversing without looking back first
. leaving engine idle for a long time without driving, wasting fuel
. others
It even has a built in back up beep warning system to help prevent accidents caused while reversing.
The system records second-by-second all driving activities including speed, acceleration, lateral acceleration, deceleration, geographic location of the vehicle, street address, heading, as well as all the rules broken by that driver. Every thing can be downloaded from the device and played back on a map on a computer screen, showing every where the driver went, their speed along the way, direction, when and where they broke the driving rules etc.
Push a button on the device and the electronic voice will tell you how many rules were broken by the driver, how many times each rule was broken, how long they broke each rule for, their mileage, hours driven etc. For example it will tell how many times the driver drove without wearing their seat belt, how many times they did not use their turn signal, how many times they speed over a certain speed, etc. It also tells the drivers maximum speed over the period of time, their maximum acceleration, maximum lateral acceleration (hard cornering), mileage, speed, number of hours driven, their GPS coordinate, heading, local GPS time, and many other details.
You can also download the data to generate reports, detailing mileage, hours driven, driving violations, maximum speed etc for one driver, or for entire fleet.
The device can use an electronic driver ID system that attaches to the drivers key ring. In this case, the driver must use the ID key before the engine will start. This identifies the driver to the system which automatically puts into effect driving rules for that driver. For example each driver can have different rules for maximum speed, which days and times they are allowed to drive, allowed driving zones, number of hours per day he is allowed to drive per day etc.
Plug it into a PDA to use it as an in-vehicle navigation system, or connect cellular module and use it for remote vehicle tracking and recovery.
The system can be used by Trucking companies, Fleet managers, Teen Drivers, Parents, School Busses, City Vehicles, Ambulance, DOT Vehicles etc.
