Last night was one of the frequent-but-irregular meetings of our "Curry Club". It's not really a club, just a group of friends who like to get together for a meal and chat, and we all love Indian... There were seven of us last night, including Kevin over from Poland for his Curry & Football fix.
As usual (of late) it was at The Spice Garden in Darlington, a place that does an excellent Thursday Night Special. You see these banquets where there's "eat as much as you like", well here it's "more than you could ever possibly eat". It's almost embarrasing, we're stuffed to bursting and there's still so much left over food. I thought about asking for a "doggy bag" to have for my lunch today, but didn't.
There was a whole mix of curries here, 3 of us vegetarians and 4 meat eaters, and a selection of vegetable side dishes, lots of rice and two huge naans. The Veg Vindaloo was lovely, really hot (I'm still paying for it today). We should have had a sweepstake on which would be the "very red curry" - there's always one dish that is bright red, and it never seems to be the same dish... I think the colouring is added at random to keep us guessing. Dunno why they think a dish has to be that red, it's completely artificial and over the top. Still tastes good though.
Strange place the Spice Garden. When we go there on Thursdays we're almost always the only ones in. I hope they have more people in on other nights, otherwise it's a wonder they stay in business. It's nice for us though, we can sit and chat all night and not be hurried by the staff, who are content to just leave us there as long as we want.
I can recommend the place - the food is very good if unspectacular, and very cheap. £7.50 each for this "eat more than you can manage" banquet. The food from the "real" menu is probably nicer, a bit more "cordon bleu" (if you can have cordon bleu Indian) - the banquet really is more cheap and plentiful.
The Spice Garden is opposite the Theatre in Darlington. 7/10

oh I love indian food. Too bad that we have to drive all the way to the Netherlands to find an indian restaurant.

Hi,
I found you from Tine's site who is a great blogging friend of mine. Wow like me you love Indian Food, I also can cook it too, but its only me at home that can eat it :( Still I have a lovely take away near me in NYC which is real good Pakistani food and really cheap. Just looking at that spread makes me feel hungry lol. When I have visited London (Im a Brit btw) I often go to one of these buffet style meals and they are really good and very good value for money. Drop in sometime and say Hi.
Huggies
